The Ministry of Showing Up: Comfort That Helps

Living the One Anothers

When a friend is grieving or discouraged, it is hard to know what to say, and easy to say something unhelpful. This course teaches the biblical practice of comfort: listening first, staying present, and speaking hope that is actually true. You will practice responding to a grieving friend, a discouraged group member, and a fainthearted believer.

What You'll Work Through

Each unit is a conversation, not a page to read. The tutor asks you to explain, apply, and work with the material until it holds.

Chapter 1: What Biblical Comfort Is

Section 1.1: Called Near in Affliction (2 Corinthians 1 and 13:11)

  • Parakaleo means to call someone near
  • We comfort with the comfort we ourselves received (2 Cor 1:3-4)
  • The goal of comfort is restoration and gospel hope, not just feeling better (2 Cor 13:11)

Section 1.2: The Two Sides of Parakaleo (Comfort and Exhortation)

  • Parakaleo means "to call near" (comfort and exhortation)
  • Comfort and exhortation are two sides of the same coin

Chapter 2: Showing Up Well

Section 2.1: Listen Before You Speak (Proverbs 18:13)

  • Proverbs 18:13 warns that answering before listening is folly and shame
  • Listening before speaking means being present without rushing to fix the problem
  • Listen to understand, not just to respond

Section 2.2: Feelings Reveal the Heart but Do Not Define Truth

  • Feelings reveal the heart but do not define truth

Chapter 3: Comfort in Practice

Section 3.1: Naming and Avoiding Pat Answers

  • Pat answers give quick words in place of presence

Section 3.2: Scenarios - Grieving, Discouraged, and Fainthearted

  • Choosing comfort over pat answers for a grieving friend
