Leading from Rest: Sabbath and Sabbaticals

T4 - Pastors and Elders

Pastors carry unusual burdens and rarely take real rest. This course presents a biblical case for sabbath and sabbaticals, then gets practical: weekly rest, monthly retreat days, and the five stages of an extended sabbatical (Disconnect, Decelerate, Discernment, Debriefing, Re-deployment). It also covers planning the sabbatical with your spouse and re-entering ministry afterward.

What You'll Work Through

Each unit is a conversation, not a page to read. The tutor asks you to explain, apply, and work with the material until it holds.

Chapter 1: The Biblical Ground of Rest

Section 1.1: Why Sabbath Matters for Ministry Leaders

  • Sabbath as ceasing, grounded in Exodus 20:8-11
  • Soul rest as moving toward Christ (Matthew 11:28-30 and Mark 1:35)
  • A sabbatical is not a study break or project in disguise

Section 1.2: Soul Rest and Common Misconceptions

  • Soul rest means departing from activity and moving toward Christ
  • A sabbatical is a ceasing, not a study break or project in disguise

Chapter 2: The Five Stages of an Extended Sabbatical

Section 2.1: Disconnect, Decelerate, and Discernment

  • Disconnect Stage: Ceasing Before Reflecting (Weeks 1-2)
  • Decelerate Stage: Being Present and Praying With Your Spouse (Weeks 2-4)
  • Discernment Stage: Listening for Repeated Themes (Weeks 3-8)

Section 2.2: Debriefing, Re-deployment, and Frequency

  • Debriefing (weeks 9-12): naming what God revealed and drafting a new normal
  • Re-deployment (weeks 12-14): re-entering ministry with gratitude, not a 'new sheriff'
  • Sabbatical frequency and the guarding rhythm around the longer break

Chapter 3: Ongoing Rhythms and Your Sabbatical Proposal

Section 3.1: Personal Retreats, the Spousal Interview, and the Rhythms Grid

  • The one-day retreat flows through four movements: unplug, get present, ponder, listen
  • The three-day retreat structure: Day One unplug and get present, Day Two praise/ponder/listen, Day Three consider and commit, then review and reentry
  • Unplug means truly removing devices, with the phone kept only as an emergency back door
  • The spousal interview brings your spouse into sabbatical planning through prayer, honest questions, and shared goals
  • The Rhythms Grid sets nonnegotiable, achievable minimums across daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and yearly cadences within the five categories of health
