Hard Conversations, Soft Hearts

Leading Small Groups

Sometimes a leader has to say something a group member will not want to hear. This course prepares you for those conversations: a six-step biblical response process, grace and truth held together, and Scripture chosen for what is actually going on in the person's heart. The tutor plays the group member so you can practice the conversation itself.

What You'll Work Through

Each unit is a conversation, not a page to read. The tutor asks you to explain, apply, and work with the material until it holds.

Chapter 1: Before You Speak

Section 1.1: Caring Enough to Have the Conversation

  • Ephesians 4:15 as the aim of every hard conversation
  • The three qualifying questions that make you ready to care
  • Choosing to engage rather than look away

Section 1.2: Reading the Heart You're About to Address

  • The Four Hearts (predominant heart attitudes)
  • Matching fruit to a heart's root motive
  • Assessing S.O.S. before the conversation

Chapter 2: The Six-Step Biblical Response

Section 2.1: Walking Through the Six Steps

  • The six-step response process as one flow, not six checkpoints
  • Step 1 answers when, how, and where using the S.O.S. and Fruit to Root
  • Step 2: check your own heart for a grace-truth blend, conviction not condemnation

Section 2.2: Matching Scripture to the Heart

  • The Four Hearts each get their own conviction-and-freedom Scripture pairing
  • Discern which heart attitude a member's fruit reveals before choosing Scripture
