Anger, Fear, Foolishness, Despair: Working with the Four Hearts

Counseling Skills and Tools

SCCI teaches that persistent struggles usually trace to one of four heart attitudes: anger, fear, foolishness, or despair. This course trains counselors to identify a person's predominant heart attitude, translate psychological labels into biblical categories, and take physical and medical factors seriously along the way. You will practice on counseling vignettes.

What You'll Work Through

Each unit is a conversation, not a page to read. The tutor asks you to explain, apply, and work with the material until it holds.

Chapter 1: The Heart Behind the Behavior

Section 1.1: Where Problems Originate

  • The heart is the source of all behavior (Luke 6:45)
  • Fruit to Root: behavior, thoughts, and desires as tree, trunk, and root
  • Why heart transformation, not behavior modification, is the target
  • Persistent struggles as a worship disorder rooted in the heart

Section 1.2: Labels versus the Living Word

  • Psychology is descriptive, not prescriptive
  • Symptoms are real observations that psychology mislabels as the root
  • Reframing a psychological label into its predominant heart attitude
  • Holding biblical reframing alongside legitimate physical factors

Chapter 2: Recognizing the Four Hearts

Section 2.1: The Four Predominant Heart Attitudes

  • The Four Hearts framework opens in Luke 6:45
  • The heart of anger seeks control, authority, and power
  • The heart of fear seeks security, acceptance, and peace
  • The hearts of foolishness and despair (pleasure/attention vs. comfort/escape)

Chapter 3: Responding Biblically to Each Heart

Section 3.1: Biblical Response and Reframe

  • Anger reframed: from control to surrender under Christ
  • Fear reframed: from security-seeking to fearing God most
  • Despair reframed: from comfort-craving to lamenting vertically with hope
  • Reframing psychological labels biblically while honoring physical factors
